The DeskJet 4255e replaced the 4155e in 2024 and keeps the same 35-sheet feeder, 60-sheet tray and HP 67 cartridges, with the changes limited to firmware and the Instant Ink bundle. It remains the entry point for anyone who wants to scan multi-page documents from a phone without paying OfficeJet prices. Expect the same HP+ conditions as its predecessor, and note that the starter cartridges are small enough that many buyers sign up to Instant Ink within the first month.

Setting up the HP DeskJet 4255e

Use HP Smart with Bluetooth on for the initial pairing and accept the first firmware update before printing. If you want to keep the option of third-party ink, decline HP+ at the setup screen. The printer's Wi-Fi light flashes while searching; a solid light plus a blinking Information light usually means a pending firmware or HP+ notice you can read in the app.

1. Unbox and prepare. Remove every piece of shipping tape and packing material, install the ink cartridges, and load paper in the tray.
2. Join your Wi-Fi. Keep the printer close to the router for setup. Most printers only connect to the 2.4GHz band, so if your router broadcasts one merged network name you may need to split the bands temporarily. See our Wi-Fi guide if it will not join.
3. Install the setup app. Use HP's official app rather than a driver you found on a search result — third-party driver sites are the most common source of printer malware.
4. Add the printer. On Windows 11: Settings › Bluetooth & devices › Printers & scanners › Add device. On macOS: System Settings › Printers & Scanners › Add Printer.
5. Print a test page and run a scan if this is an all-in-one, so you find any problem now rather than when you are in a hurry.
