Is the HP ENVY 6420e right for you?

The ENVY 6420e gives UK, Irish and Australian buyers the document-feeder version of the ENVY 6000e family, matching the American 6455e. Home workers like it for scanning contracts straight to email from the app, and the quiet duplex engine makes it easy to live with in a living room. HP+ lock-in to HP 305 cartridges is the trade-off, and the feeder is prone to pulling two sheets when the paper is fresh from a ream and stuck together.

Setting up the HP ENVY 6420e

Set up in HP Smart with Bluetooth on and an HP account; the app will guide HP+ activation and the first firmware update. For the document feeder, fan the stack and load it face-up with the guides touching the edges. If the feeder jams repeatedly, wipe the grey pickup roller under the ADF lid with a damp lint-free cloth.

1. Unbox and prepare. Remove every piece of shipping tape and packing material, install the ink cartridges, and load paper in the tray.
2. Join your Wi-Fi. Keep the printer close to the router for setup. Most printers only connect to the 2.4GHz band, so if your router broadcasts one merged network name you may need to split the bands temporarily. See our Wi-Fi guide if it will not join.
3. Install the setup app. Use HP's official app rather than a driver you found on a search result — third-party driver sites are the most common source of printer malware.
4. Add the printer. On Windows 11: Settings › Bluetooth & devices › Printers & scanners › Add device. On macOS: System Settings › Printers & Scanners › Add Printer.
5. Print a test page and run a scan if this is an all-in-one, so you find any problem now rather than when you are in a hurry.
