HP OfficeJet Pro 8135e
Home offices buying new who want the current 8000-series hardware

The OfficeJet Pro 7740 is the full wide-format machine: it prints, scans, copies and duplexes at 11 x 17 and has two 250-sheet trays so letter paper can stay loaded alongside tabloid. Architects, schools and churches bought it as an affordable alternative to a copier. It is large and heavy, the printhead is the usual OfficeJet weak point, and the large flatbed lid needs clearance above the printer, which catches people out on shelves.

Best for: Small offices and schools needing true A3 scanning and printing
Connect by Ethernet where you can; Wi-Fi setup through the touchscreen wizard needs 2.4 GHz. Assign tray 1 to letter and tray 2 to 11 x 17 under Setup, Tray and Paper Management so jobs pull from the right tray automatically. Leave the printer powered on between uses to protect the printhead.
The HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 uses the following consumables. Match the number exactly when you buy: the same printer family often uses several different cartridge numbers by region.
High-yield (XL) versions almost always cost less per page if you print regularly. On third-party ink and toner, read our honest assessment first, and note that some manufacturers push firmware that rejects non-original chips.
