Epson EcoTank ET-4800 vs HP Smart Tank 7301: Which Tank All-in-One Handles Paperwork Better?

Once you have decided on refillable bottled ink, the next question is which machine handles actual paperwork properly. The Epson EcoTank ET-4800 and the HP Smart Tank 7301 are the two obvious candidates at this price, and they solve the problem differently. The Epson prioritises fax and a wired connection. The HP prioritises paper handling and speed.

Specifications side by side

Three rows decide most purchases: duplex, fax and paper capacity. The HP wins two of them decisively. The Epson wins the third, and if you need a fax line the decision is already made.

Running costs

Both land at roughly 0.9 to 1.1 cents for a mixed colour page and well under half a cent for mono. In the UK, Epson 104 bottles run around GBP 11 to 13 and HP's 32XL around GBP 20, keeping both under 1p per mono page.

Paper handling in practice

The ET-4800 uses a 100-sheet rear feed. Paper stands upright at the back, exposed to dust, and you reload roughly every fortnight at moderate use. Manual duplex on a rear feeder is particularly awkward because you must reload the entire printed stack in the correct orientation.

The Smart Tank 7301 uses a 250-sheet front cassette that closes. It keeps paper clean and flat, holds two and a half times as much, and combined with automatic duplex it will print a 60-page double-sided document without you touching it.

Both ADFs are single-sided, so two-sided originals must be turned by hand on either machine. HP's holds five more sheets, which is not a meaningful difference.

Who each printer suits

Choose the Epson EcoTank ET-4800 if

• You need a working fax line, still common in healthcare, legal and property work.
• You want a wired Ethernet connection and no reliance on Wi-Fi at all.
• Photo output matters: 5760 x 1440 dpi and Epson's dye set are better on glossy stock.
• Space is limited; the Epson is smaller and lighter.
• You rarely print long documents, so manual duplex is acceptable.

Choose the HP Smart Tank 7301 if

• You print long documents and want automatic two-sided output.
• You want to refill paper once a month rather than every fortnight.
• Speed matters: 15 ppm against 10 is noticeable on any real job.
• Your 2.4 GHz band is congested and you want a 5 GHz connection.
• You prefer a touchscreen for walk-up copying and scanning.

Setup, apps and drivers

Epson Smart Panel handles ET-4800 setup with no account requirement, accurate tank level reporting and direct access to nozzle checks and head cleaning. Desktop scanning uses Epson ScanSmart, which combined with the ADF makes a decent document-digitising setup. The Ethernet port removes an entire class of wireless problems if you can use it.

HP Smart is required in practice for the Smart Tank 7301 and doubles as the driver installer. It is the more capable application, with strong mobile scanning, edge detection and scan-to-cloud, but it requires an HP account and repeatedly offers Instant Ink, which is not applicable to a tank printer. Decline it. HP Easy Start offers a more conventional driver installation.

Both support AirPrint and Mopria Print Service, so neither locks you into its vendor app for basic printing.

Known weaknesses and common errors

Epson EcoTank ET-4800

The permanently installed printhead is the main long-term risk. Left idle for months, nozzles dry and cleaning cycles consume ink; in severe cases a channel clogs permanently and the head is not user-replaceable. Print a colour page weekly and this effectively never happens.

HP Smart Tank 7301

The Smart Tank uses a single integrated printhead assembly for all four colours. It is replaceable on most units but expensive relative to the printer, so persistent colour dropout that survives two cleaning cycles is a genuine concern; start with HP printhead problem.

Regional availability and model names

• United States and Canada: EcoTank ET-4800 with Epson 522 bottles; Smart Tank 7301 with HP 32XL and 31 bottles.
• United Kingdom and Ireland: Epson sells the ET-4810 in place of the ET-4800, using Epson 104 bottles. HP's nearest equivalents are the Smart Tank 7305 and 7605.
• Australia and New Zealand: Epson lists the ET-4810 locally; HP's comparable model is the Smart Tank 7605 family.

Ink bottles do not cross regions. Epson keys its bottles and colour-codes them per market, and buying North American 522 stock for a European ET-4810 leaves you with ink you cannot use.

Long-term reliability and what tends to fail first

Tank printers fail in predictable ways, and knowing them changes how you use the machine.

On both models the printhead is the component that decides the printer's lifespan. Neither is designed to be swapped casually, and a channel that will not recover after repeated cleaning effectively ends the machine. The single most effective preventive measure is regular light use, followed by leaving the printer powered so it can run its own maintenance cycles rather than switching it off at the wall.

Second on the list is the paper path. The Epson's rear feed collects dust because paper sits exposed, and the pickup roller glazes with age, producing misfeeds. The HP's closed cassette avoids the dust problem but its pickup tyres also harden over time. Both are cleanable with a damp lint-free cloth and both are the first thing to check when a printer starts skewing or double-feeding.

Verdict

Choose the HP Smart Tank 7301 if you print documents. Automatic duplex, a 250-sheet cassette and 50 per cent more speed make it the better machine for anything resembling office work, and the running cost is identical to the Epson's.

Choose the Epson EcoTank ET-4800 if you need fax, want Ethernet, or care about photo quality. Those three things are genuinely absent from the HP, and if any of them is on your list the decision makes itself.
