Epson EcoTank ET-2800 vs Brother HL-L2350DW: Ink Tank or Mono Laser?

These two printers cost about the same and get recommended for the same reason: low running costs. Beyond that they have almost nothing in common. The Epson EcoTank ET-2800 is a colour all-in-one with refillable ink bottles. The Brother HL-L2350DW is a single-function monochrome laser. Choosing between them is really a decision about what kind of printing you do and how often you do it.

The comparison table makes the decision look easy in the laser's favour on speed, and easy in the EcoTank's favour on capability. Both readings are correct.

Running costs compared

The Epson is cheaper per page by roughly an order of magnitude: around 0.33 cents for mono against the Brother's 3.3 to 3.9 cents including drum amortisation. Over 5,000 pages that is about $16 of ink against about $180 of toner and drum.

In the UK the gap narrows a little, because Brother toner is much cheaper there. A TN-2420 at around GBP 55 for 3,000 pages is roughly 1.8p per page, against about 0.3p for Epson 104 ink. The EcoTank still wins comfortably.

The reliability question: which survives neglect?

This is the argument that decides it for a lot of households.

Toner is a dry powder. A laser printer can sit unused for a year, wake up, and produce a perfect page. Nothing dries, nothing clogs, and there is no maintenance cycle consuming consumables in the background.

An inkjet, including a tank printer, keeps liquid ink in a permanently installed printhead. Left idle for months, nozzles dry out. The printer will attempt automatic cleaning cycles that consume ink, and in bad cases a channel clogs permanently. The ET-2800's head is not user-replaceable, so a severe clog effectively ends the printer.

Who each printer suits

Choose the Epson EcoTank ET-2800 if

• You need colour, even occasionally, for school work, photos or forms.
• You need to scan or copy and do not want a separate scanner.
• Your printing volume is steady rather than sporadic.
• Absolute lowest cost per page matters.
• Desk space is limited.

Choose the Brother HL-L2350DW if

• You print black text and nothing else: labels, letters, tickets, forms.
• Your printer is used unpredictably, sometimes weeks apart.
• You want speed and automatic duplex.
• You already scan with your phone or a separate device.
• You want a printer that will still work perfectly after a long holiday.

Setup, apps and drivers

Epson uses Epson Smart Panel for setup, tank monitoring and maintenance, with Epson ScanSmart handling scanning on a computer. No account is required and tank levels are reported accurately.

Brother uses Brother Mobile Connect, or you can skip the app entirely and add the printer through Windows printer settings using driverless IPP. There is no scanning software to install because there is no scanner.

Known weaknesses and common errors

Epson EcoTank ET-2800

The fixed printhead and idle-clogging risk are the headline issues, followed by the waste ink pad counter described in Epson ink pad service life. Wireless dropouts appear as the fault covered in Epson communication error and are usually solved with a DHCP reservation.

There is no automatic duplex, which surprises buyers who assume all modern printers have it. Manual duplex on a rear-feed printer is workable but slow.

Brother HL-L2350DW

Brother's toner sensor produces a replace toner message before the cartridge is genuinely empty, and the drum end of life counter triggers at 12,000 pages regardless of condition. Both have documented resets where the part is still serviceable.

Regional availability and model names

• United States and Canada: ET-2800 with Epson 522 bottles; HL-L2350DW with TN730/TN760/TN770 toner and a DR730 drum.
• United Kingdom and Ireland: the ET-2800 is sold as the ET-2810, ET-2811 or ET-2812 using Epson 104 bottles. The HL-L2350DW keeps its name and uses TN-2410/TN-2420 toner with a DR-2400 drum.
• Australia and New Zealand: Epson lists the ET-2810; Brother Australia sells the HL-L2350DW with TN-2430/TN-2450 toner and a DR-2325 drum.

Noise, warm-up and where each printer lives

These two behave very differently in a room. The ET-2800 is quiet in operation, with a low mechanical whirr and no heat, so it is comfortable in a bedroom, a lounge or a shared study. It does, however, run periodic maintenance cycles that can start unexpectedly, which is startling at night.

The Brother is louder. A laser fuser has to reach operating temperature, so there is a distinct warm-up noise, a fan, and a burst of mechanical sound with each page. It also emits a faint warm-toner smell and produces measurable heat, which is why lasers usually end up in a home office or a hallway rather than beside a bed.

Power consumption tells the same story. The EcoTank draws a few watts idle and single-digit watts printing. The Brother idles low but spikes sharply while the fuser is up to temperature. Over a year the difference is small in money terms, but it matters if the printer shares a circuit with other equipment or lives somewhere you value silence.

Verdict

Choose the Epson EcoTank ET-2800 if you need colour or scanning at all. It is a complete printer for a household, its running cost is the lowest of any consumer machine, and it costs no more than the laser to buy. The condition attached is that you must use it regularly.

Choose the Brother HL-L2350DW if your printing is mono documents, produced in unpredictable bursts, and you value a machine that simply works whenever you switch it on. It is faster, it duplexes automatically, and it will never need a head cleaning cycle.
